Zeta Stands with the City of Baltimore and Our Brother of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Rep. Elijah Cummings

Recently, disparaging remarks were made regarding the duties of U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings, who represents Maryland’s 7th District, specifically about the condition of Baltimore and his management of federal funds. As a community-conscious, action-oriented organization, Zeta stands with the City of Baltimore and our brother of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Rep. Cummings. We also stand in solidarity with members of Congress who continue to represent our best interests on Capitol Hill, despite many setbacks.

We condemn incendiary language that further divides our country and unfairly highlights a city in need as a place undeserving of receiving funding and services like the rest of America. The challenges facing the city of Baltimore are no different than any other major city. The communities in Maryland, like the rest of the country, would greatly benefit from leaders who focus on identifying the root cause of problems and work toward providing solutions.

No elected official should be subjected to insults and other disparaging remarks from the leadership of this country. Not only does it disrupt the unity for which we all strive, it makes it difficult to address important issues that we, as citizens and elected officials, face every day.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded to improve the human condition of all people, and humbly serve as advocates of the people in our communities. When the human condition is being compromised, we cannot and will not be silent.

In Solidarity,

Valerie Hollingsworth Baker
